Writing Challenge

Tuesday 10 June 2008

I like having set writing topics. There's something about having an enforced structure which gives you the freedom to go wild within the restriction. It's a cool thing. My 3D writers' group has one going at the moment, all based on a couple of wrongly-sent text messages one of the members got on his daughter's phone.

I keep thinking that I want to write about asparagus, which is really strange, because all I really have to say about asparagus is that (a) it tastes like shit and (b) it tastes like the taste I had in the back of my throat the whole time I had tonisillitis. But hey, who knows where it could go?

So anyway. I'm sick of talking about myself and my own stuff, and uni has finished for the semester (with one essay to go) and so I wanted to pose myself a challenge. Give me something to write about, people. Every single suggestion in the comments to this post, I will use as a blog post topic.

I can't promise they will be any good, and I can't promise they will be very long, but this is the task I set myself. So come on, fire away.

  1. one of my clients teaches a creative writing class and when she was in last week she told me she was doing a similar thing like you are talking about here.

She was going to write a paper on Chocolate Chip Cookies. Which are my "go-to" cookies behind my mom's Snickerdoodles. Any ideas flowing yet?

  2. Oh, and by the way....fresh steamed asparagus is one of my favorite things to eat out of all foods in the world :(

  4. Yeah, Monk seems to like Boobies. Go and look at his art. Every female has a giant pair of bazoongas.

I'm almost scared to ask what a Snickerdoodle is.

  7. Okay. I am gearing up to write about something I have never heard of nor eaten. Fine. Then I will write about breasts.

Anyone else? Come on, make it weird.

  8. Sorry, Kent. Next time you eat asparagus, it'll be nice to think of my swollen tonsils, I'm sure. Bon appetit.

  10. Since the advisory board seems to be on the topic of food (and body parts), please tell me what marmite tastes like. I hear it is popular in Oz. I have seen it in my supermarket, but haven't dared try it. Name a couple of uses for it, please.

  11. barbara, marmite tastes disgusting, on the other hand, vegemite is delicious!?!

sue, my blog post topic for you is:

  13. my cat keeps chewing on my books, does that mean she would like to read or that she hates my doing it?
    Is that a topic?
my umbrella cries tears of frustration every time I close it. Does that mean it likes the rain or just needs a challenge now and then?
    Is that a topic?

It's great that you're looking for new things to write about. I too get so sick from writing about mememe.

  14. Yes, of course they're topics, Anonimo! Just give me six months to write each one, and we'll be fine.

They sound like magic realism stories :)

  15. I think maybe,

If Kim, Sue and Tyler ever got together and started a church, who would get run over by a steamroller in the parking lot first?

And if that doesn't make sense, it's your problem. You are the creative one ;)

  16. From 2012 ...

I think it's good to from time to time revisit foods you once did not like. After all, who likes coffee when theyre eight, right? And so it happens that I revisited asparagus ... and now I understand where you're coming from, Kent :) I love it!
