The lucky country, the land of friendly Aussies ...

... is a good selling point.  Sunlight-dappled advertisements for "where the bloody hell are ya?"  Come visit the land of the amiable, friendly Aussie.

When in reality, Australia has changed beyond recognition in the past 20 years.

You couldn't put it on a travel advertisement, but more and more often the reality resembles something more like this.

  1. As we've discussed before, I don't think that this joyful embrace of humanity is unique to Australia and so I would say that in fact the WORLD has changed a whole bunch in the last 20 years, actually I think the last 30 years. I think the real lack of humanity that we face now has more to do with the 80's, we've just refined our "worldliness" over the last 15-20 years.

  2. No, I agree, I don't think it's unique to Australia either. I think though that we are showing our heart more now - this is the heart of one of the richest countries in the world (one founded on genocide, but we won't even start to go there).

Refined our "worldliness" to fit in line with economic theory. And that is the result. And how small it makes us all feel.

Yeah, I think the 80's has a whole lot to answer for, doesn't it.

I like it when you comment on my blog :) *MWAH* xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

  3. Lou's post impacted me that way, too. However, I'd say that's typical here, as well, at least in general. It's that old fear that whatever they have is "contagious", or "they deserve it" for being an addict or homeless or whatever. Humanity is wretched some days.

  4. Erin - yeah, how ancient that fear of contagion is, eh. We are wretched some days. Or maybe all of them, I don't know. (Spot the woman nearing the winter solstice :p

  5. You are almost through it!

We have finally seen some summer just today, and tomorrow. It's really late this year. I guess I can take the gloves out of my car now. :)

  6. Goodness me :) I hope you get some nice warm days now. It is rather chilly here as we speak, and raining.
