A Very Grinchy Christmas

Monday 12 December 2011

I really didn't think Weekend Notes would post my uncommercial Christmas-hating piece, but they did :)

  1. good one  -  i 'liked' it, but for some reason it has not shown up on fb
in the spirit of grinchness. i hate it when an application wants your facebook log on but doesn't deliver what you signed on for

  2. Dear fellow sort of Grinch:  that's very annoying, and yet rather applicable, considering Christmas doesn't deliver  either :P)

  5. Really?  Geez, what is wrong with me then?  My perceptions are skewed.  What I FELT like was that this piece was rather cynical and mean and everyone would think, "Gee, that Sue, she's such a bitch."

Help! she wailed.  I keep equating having an opinion with being a bitch in my head.  When the fuck am I going to get over this crap?  I need an excorcist, or a shaman or something :)

    But anyway.  Thanks, Erin!!!  :)

  6. I think it was wonderful...rather than just exclaiming that everyone ought to just give up the whole nonsense, there are good and constructive things to do about it. Love it.

Along the lines of "No one is as together as everyone else thinks they are, nor is anyone as fucked up as they think they appear to everyone else"...something like "No one spends as much time thinking badly about us as we think they do".  :)

  7. Oh, thanks, Erin.

Your second paragraph is very much worth remembering if stuck in bouts of paranoia :)  Actually, I think this is my absolute number one fear - fear of disapproval or of criticism. Therefore, the only way to break such fears is to incur disapproval and criticism according to the book I'm reading about it.  Which is of course how it has to be.  So ... I guess depending on which way you look at it, designing for yourself a bit of a program to possibly INVITE criticism could well be fun, if you look at it in a certain way :)

  8. Hey nice! And this year I get to do one of the ones on the list. As I'm not going back to England and have no family in Canada, I plan to spend the entire day in my pyjamas and have ordered a long list of Christmas movies from the library. (I will be Doing Things other days but Christmas Day is All MINE). So thanks for the affirmation!

  10. Nice piece, Sue.  I really do like your writing; I like the archness and the humor you bring to your pieces.  The Norman Rockwell image of what Christmas should "feel" like is so disturbing because it can't, in reality, be approached and we find ourselves...wanting when everything is said and done. Not to mention how Christmas has been weaponized for use in the culture wars... . I will raise a glass to you Christmas day none-the-less, and toast to our good fortune and a contented new year.  (Arizona time of course :)

  11. Thank you, Brad (it is you, is it not?)

Yes, is what disturbs me too.  And I know some people find ME disturbing and probably think, "Why not just roll with it and enjoy it?"  Which I can do to a certain extent (eventually) but it's just frustrating that one of the few things we share as a culture is one that's so devoid of anything nourishing and sustaining.

Nevertheless, I will raise a glass to you also ... on Boxing Day :)
