Or at least, it felt like it on Saturday night when I subjected my partner and myself to the last 30 minutes of Dirty Dancing.

Goodness me, what a giant field of corn, stretching far beyond what the eye can see!  So cliched!  Truly awful acting deserving three sentences running with exclamation marks!

I tried watching another movie from the 80's the other day too - Local Hero.  Unfortunately, I had to turn it off after five minutes because it was just so heavily cliched and caricatured that it seemed ridiculous, like a soap opera.

I know we watched Dirty Dancing as teenagers, and I know we were aware of the corniness of it.  But still, what a difference 30 years makes.  The intervening decades have seen the field of corn transformed into 11 giant vats of high fructose corn syrup poured over things which were vaguely acceptable back in the 80's.  It has, unfortunately, began to seem quite truly like another time and place.  A more innocent time.

Saying that makes me feel creakily ancient, like I am the door of a building first built in the 1700s.  For all the distance between now and then, the 80's may as well have been located in that century:)

Patrick still looked pretty alright in that black t-shirt, though.

(Apologies to Shawn Econo, the taker of this picture and the spermer of this adorable boy, for proving my point with this picture :)

  1. Haha! We watched Dirty Dancing, in its entirety, last year.
And, while I'm not totally averse to a little 80's cheese now and again, we passed on watching it on the weekend... too soon.

Seriously, with the multitude of great movies out there - and, I'm not talking blockbusters - can't they program FTA TV better?

Yeah, Patrick cut a fine figure, must admit. I always feel a little sad when I see him in his earlier roles, now.

    1. Yeah - you'd think that there'd be a whole stack of good movies that surely would cost just as little as Dirty Dancing to screen on FTA! It's always a bit frustrating when you think of how many wonderful things we could be watching, huh

  2. I still LOVE Dirty Dancing. It is the epitome of the 1980s even though it's set in the 1960s. I never really liked Jennifer Grey in the role, but something about that made it perfectly cheesy. Anyhow, that MAN could DANCE and that was why we watched it again and again.

I subject my kids to 80s films every so often just to prove how good they have it. :) I have made them watch most of the John Hughes collection because then they appreciate the movies we love to hate of the last 5 years or so.

Anyhow, do you realized how lucky us 80s kids have it to have Robert Downey Jr. back in action. :)

    1. Who are you?

      :D

I feel so out of step with ... well, both of you when it comes to movies, at least!

So no, I did not realize that Robert Downey Jr being back in action was affecting my luck levels. Perhaps this is where I am going wrong ... :)
