Spot Check

Quick, what song's going through your head right now?

Mine's pretty common for New Year's Day, and for a day where I stayed up all night:

Up All Night, Sleep All Day - Slaughter
New Year's Day - U2
Happy New Year - ABBA (what naffery).

I am so cactus. I slept for two hours and then awoke to a horrible scratching in my ear, which went on for about 45 minutes. It was sorta scarey, and sorta prayish, and sorta didn't know what was going on, whether something had crawled in my ear, or my eardrum was perforating, or my head was beginning to spontaneously combust, or that aneurism I joked about the other day was beginning to occur.

I seriously think something crawled in my ear. I could feel something in there, could hear, amplified, the scratchings and scrabblings. How horridly creepy. I was thinking I was going to have to go to the doctor's or the hospital. Could barely move without groaning after two hours' sleep and staying up all night. Us crusty crabby old women cannot abide such things.

Put some Audiclean in my ear (sea water, basically). The scrabbling went away. It still feels like there is something in my ear. Perhaps I am just having auditory and sensory hallucinations. Perhaps there was something extra in my coffee last night :)

I went to sleep until 1.30 this afternoon. I am still in my pyjamas. Staying up all night quietens the Gremlins that say, "What are you doing next? What are you doing next? What are you doing next?" It is somewhat nice to be still in my pyjamas when it is 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

Happy New Year, Northern Hemisphereans peoples.

  1. Hsppy New Year, Discombobulated Sue!

    Maybe it was an earwig?

I slept in - most unlike me! - too, but only till 10.45... Must go and have a shower and get dressed. Jan's only just woken up too, so I don't feel so bad. (I did get up to let the cats out at 6.45 but made the mistake of going back to bed...)

  2. Sue, I woke up at about 3am and as I was trying to go back to sleep the intro to a song began to play in my head. I don't know how log it was before I figured out who it was and when I finally did I couldn't remember the name of the song. It's been awhile since I've listened to them. Reading your post just reminded me of this early morning happening. I went to iTunes to get the name of the song so here it is.

    Green by Love Spit Love.

I really liked their first recording by the same name.

Love Spit Love was the band Richard Butler formed after The Psychedelic Furs spit up. I loved The Psychedelic Furs.

  4. In the background, our CBC playing the year's best of Canadian music. Nothing I recognize so far, but I am so old. I must get dressed and tidy up. I have neighbours coming for dinner tonight. It is part of my rehabilitation.
Happy New Year, Sue! Keep on discombobulating!

  5. I spent the entire night with something in my head, it was driving me nuts, but I finally chased it away and now I can't remember what it was. It was horribly annoying.

  6. Mike - maybe it was. I don't know because I couldn't find it anywhere. Of course, I went looking on the interwebs for earwig info, and got a whole lot of "this is an old wive's tale". But then, even if it is an old wive's tale doesn't mean that it would never happen. Oh, what a minefield we must walk over to come to any conclusions at all, LOL :)

Yes, going back to bed will always send you off into sleeping later than you normally would, doesn't it :) I actually like the disconnect sometimes. And the weird dreams :)

Kent - that's an interesting song to have in your head. I listened to Am I Wrong and then went searching for Green as well. I remember both of those songs but haven't heard them in a few years. It's always fun to know what's going through other people's heads :) I hope your musical discombobulations didn't keep you awake till 4.30 racking your brains :)

Barbara - ooh, neighbours coming for dinner sounds like a great way to rehabilitate :) Must do more of it myself (although I did have 2 girls from down the road hanging out here yesterday while I was gardening, which was nice :) I hope you had a lovely dinner.

Erin - damn! I want to know what it was! Isn't it frustrating how often we play crap songs in our heads? It's like the musical equivalent of the Gremlins going, "You're pathetic" but instead it's Cyndi Lauper singing "Goonies R Good Enough" :)

  7. You could't resist with the Goonies, huh?

Well, I'll see your Goonies and raise you Never Gonna Give You Up.
